Josef Toufar (1902–1950), a martyred priest. Josef Toufar was arrested on 28 January 1950 by secret police. It was a few weeks after the unexplained movement of the cross, which occurred on 11 December 1949 during a church service inside the church. P. Toufar was taken to Valdice prison where he was tortured. He was forced to take part in the filming of an alleged miracle at the church in Číhošť in the pulpit. He died on 25 February 1950 in a hospital in Prague. After his autopsy his body was thrown into a mass grave in Ďáblice. On 14 November 2014 the remains were lifted from the mass grave. After their identification, they were solemnly buried in the church of Číhošť on 12 July 2015 with the participation of the Czech primate, Cardinal Dominik Duka and a number of pilgrims.

The monument is located in front of the side entrance of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Číhošť, where in 1948–1950 the priest Josef Toufar (1902–1950), a martyred priest, served as pastor.

The circumstances of unveiling
The author of the monument is the academic sculptor Roman Podrázský (1943–2001), whose most famous work is a collection of sculptures in the Meditation Garden in the Memorial to the Victims of Evil in Pilsen. The monument was unveiled on September 22, 1990 with the participation of more than seventy priests and the public. He was consecrated by the Bishop of Hradec Králové Karel Otčenášek and the abbot of the Želiv Monastery by Bohumil Vít Tajovský.

The Memorial is an important one to Josef Toufar, where people worship his monument.
